FEC Strauss Bascule Bridge: Bascule Truss

Unless otherwise noted, all illustrations and text are copyright 1997, E W Wall.

The bascule truss is a Pratt truss of the style typical for this bridge. The span is 216 feet long from the rest bearing to the main trunnion and 39 feet 7 and one-quarter inches tall. Width of the span is 32 feet 4 inches center-to-center of the trusses. It provides 22 feet 6 inches vertical clearance and a maximum clear channel of 195 feet at the bottom chord and a minimum clear channel of 171 feet 6 inches at 229 feet above Mean High Water. The six northernmost panels are each 28 feet long; the two southernmost panels are each 21 feet 6 inches long and the extreme southern tip of the span is 5 feet long. This southern tip provides an offset to the main trunnion, which actually stands 6 feet 6 inches above the bottom of the tower truss, and 5 feet above the bottom of the bascule truss. The rail bases are 5 feet 11 inches above the bottom of the bascule truss, and 13.2 feet above mean high water.
